At the table
Xanthe and Fletcher over a set of drawings. This is the room where your house gets talked through, with the samples on the shelves behind them.
Samples and finishes
Stone, timber and joinery samples come off the shelves and onto the table, so the choices are made by hand, not from a catalogue.
The waiting court
Outside, a curved concrete bench sits under the hanging plants. Take a minute before we start. Good things are coming.
Then and now

The studio is a Fairfield Queenslander Philip raised and rebuilt from 1989, first as the family home, then reworked once more as the studio you will visit. Every question you might have about your own house, we have asked of this one.
1989 · The renovation begins
Philip’s first major renovation. The house up on stumps, the new lower level about to go in beneath it. From the family album.
1990 · Midway through
Six months in. The steel and the frame for the lower level are going in, and the house begins to take its second form.
1992 · The office opens
The house becomes the family home, and Philip opens the doors to work on other people’s.
2026 · Today, the Stark studio
The same house, now the design studio where we meet you and where the drawings for the houses on site are done.

Common questions

Is the studio visit really free?
Yes. You come to the studio in Fairfield, we talk through the house, the brief and the budget for about an hour, and you leave with an estimate. There is no charge and no obligation to go further.
What is the difference between an estimate and a quote?
An estimate is a considered range based on what you tell us and what we know about houses like yours. A quote is a fixed price, and it needs drawings. We give you the range at the first meeting so you can decide whether to invest in the drawings.
Do I need drawings or an architect first?
No. Most people come with photos and an idea. If you have drawings, bring them. If you have an architect, we work with them. If you have neither, our design team draws the house.
Will you come to the house?
The studio meeting is free. If you would rather we come to the house first, a site visit is $450.
How far ahead do you book?
One crew, one site at a time means a small number of projects each year. Starts are typically six to twelve months out, so the earlier we talk the better.
Where do you build?
Brisbane’s inner and middle suburbs: Paddington, Ascot, New Farm, Red Hill, Fairfield, Bulimba, Hamilton, Teneriffe and surrounds.

Email photos and any drawings before the meeting and we will have them on the table.
ONE STUDIO
We design, and we build what we design. The same people draw the house, get it approved and build it.
